North East District Fall 2018 Lay Servant Ministry Training

Classes will run on Friday, September 14, 2018 (6:30-9 p.m. ) and Saturday, September 15, 2018 (8:30 a.m.- 5 p.m.) with lunch and snacks provided. The classes will be held at Ortega UMC | 4807 Roosevelt Blvd | Jacksonville, FL 32210. Class sizes are limited to 15 students per class. Be sure to register early. NO walk-in registrations please. If you want to register by check, please call Pam at the District Office at 904-396-3026 and she will help you get registered.

This training is open to all. If you are seeking to receive certification of re-certification credits you must attend all 10 hours of the training. Registration will be open through September 4, 2018.

We are offering the following class selections (please note that you must purchase your own book in advance**):

  • Basic Lay Servant Class with Rev. Art McClellan, Ortega UMC  - This basic course includes a study of what it means to be God’s called people and how we may be at work for God in our own communities. The course provides learning opportunities in three areas of service for lay speakers: leading, caring and communicating. Required Book: "Lay Servant Ministries" by Sandy Zeigler Jackson/Brian Jackson - ISBN # 978-0-88177-626-3**
  • Discover Your Spiritual Gifts with Rev. Jay Therrell, District Superintendent (Advanced Lay Servant) This course helps participants understand spiritual gifts and how the church can use them to fulfill it mission and minsitry. Participants will also learn what it means to be a spiritual leader and will be equipped to lead others in exploring and using their spiritual gifts.. Required book – Each One a Minister by William J. Carter – ISBN #978-0-88177-375-0**
  • Afire with God with Mr. John Russell, Mandarin UMC (Advanced Lay Servant) This course helps participants develop a holistic understanding of stewardship. Required book – Afire with God By Betsy Schwarzentraub– ISBN #978-0-88177-520-4**
  • Justice in the Everyday Life with Rev. Heather Harding, Fleming Island UMC (Advanced Lay Servant) This course looks at the social principles of the United Methodist Church. Required book – Social Principles of the United Methodist Church 2017-2020 – ISBN #978-1-50183-577-3**

**Please note all registrants are required to purchase their own book. Books will NOT be provided at the start of the training. Please be sure to order your book early so you can read the text prior to class. Books can be purchased at www.cokesbury.com; www.upperroom.org and through other sites such as Amazon.
